Corporal Glen Vincent Crawford
Defiance County, Ohio, was the birthplace of Glen Crawford on December 31, 1918, to parents Earl and Elma Pearl Hutchins Crawford. In the 1940 census, the family lived in Washington Township with Glen's siblings, Elton and Helen.
Glen attended two years at Mark Center High School.
Glen enlisted in Toledo, Ohio, on June 25, 1943, at about the age of 25. His enlistment record noted that he was 68 inches tall (5'8") and 146 pounds. He was single with no dependents.
His training took place in Camp Shelby, Mississippi, and Indiantown Gap in Pennsylvania.
He served in the Fiji Islands, the Russell Islands, and New Georgia.
On July 28, he was killed in action in the Solomon Islands at Munda.
The Sherwood Chronicle noted that Glen and a fellow soldier, Noel Miller, had come home to Sherwood for furlough after training in Pennsylvania. Noel was later killed by a grenade as he was training soldiers in Texas.
