Early Female Physicians in Defiance County - Dr. Ella White

Around the turn of the century, and even earlier, Defiance was blessed with at least five dedicated female physicians: Dr. Kate Hoover, Dr. Nettie Belau, Dr. Adelia Rohn, Dr. Ella White, and Dr. Bell Slocum.

The first mention of Dr. Ella P. White in Defiance was found in the Defiance Democrat of April 22, 1897:

Nothing was found on her early years before her arrival here. Interestingly, she was referred to as MRS. White in the above article, but no mention of her husband was found.

Various newspaper accounts placed her at 519 Jefferson Street in 1898 and on Third Street in 1899.  She was a member of the United Brethren Church and quite active in their organizations, helping to start a Sacred Literature Society there.

After that, nothing could be found on Dr. White.  Perhaps she just moved away, but no evidence could be found beyond her presence in Defiance from 1897 - 1899.
