Sherwood Chronicle, January 2, 1947, pg. 1

"The Women's Christian Temperance Union has exerted significant influence in the community for years, and the above is a picture of the first group ever formed in Sherwood, with the photograph being snapped before the turn of the century, the exact date being unknown, by August Koons, who loaned the picture to the Chronicle.

In late years, the national policy of the WCTU has been of a somewhat restrained nature, but in the years immediately before and after the taking of this picture, it was a militant organization, fighting Demon Rum with every available weapon and striking mighty blows on behalf of women's suffrage.  No other organization played so large a part in promoting national prohibition, and none other is doing more today in advocating temperance.."
